I’m reminded of an old axiom: Life will not give you what you desire or even deserve. Life will give you what you settle for.

self-feeders

[Self-feeders] have motivated themselves to hear God on a daily basis, and are already in that frame of mind when they walk through the front door [of the church.] The weekend services help coach them further.

Think about it this way. In a recent edition of The American Journal of Medicine, doctors published a highly revealing conclusion: The health of twenty-first century America will no longer be determined by what people can get doctors to do for them. The health of America today will be determined by what the doctors can get people to do for themselves. Can you see how this prescription applies equally to each of us? A once-a-week meal of braised skinless chicken, steamed vegetables, and a vitamin pill, no matter how healthy or scrumptious it might be, would in the long run still leave us weak and undernourished if that’s all we ate.

learn, unlearn and relearn

Futurist Alvin Toffler wrote that “the illiterate of the twenty-first century will not be those who cannot read and write, but those who cannot learn, unlearn and relearn.” That is our task as a church as well. In order to continue ministering to a changing society, we must continually adapt and change. Likewise, in order to be the people God wants us to be, we must continue to learn, unlearn and relearn.
