control of cultural change

Evangelicals are slowly learning that cultural change is brought about by cultural gatekeepers—those people who have access to and control of the reality defining institution of America. Cultural gatekeepers give shape to what we take for granted about our worlds.

Yet few evangelicals hold these positions of influence and few evangelical ministries seek to reach these people. Moreover few evangelicals have the cultural capital to address these gatekeepers. We are seriously disadvantaged by a crippling anti-intellectualism. Many evangelicals just do not think. For the first time in American history, the more one is educated the less likely it is that he or she will take faith seriously. We seem to be gatekeeper proof. Evangelicals cannot count on their size alone. Numbers may win elections, but minds win cultures.
